"Health Qigong originated from China but belongs to the World" Deputy Chairman of Chinese Health Qigong Association, Mr Huang Linghai
“Qi” means the vital energy/breath of the body, while “Gong” means the practice of cultivating and enhancing “Qi”.
Qigong is an important part of traditional Chinese culture, which originated in China about more than 4000 years ago. Huang Di, the Yellow Emperor of China and his classic book of internal medicine are the fundamental, doctrinal sources of Qigong as a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is now regarded as one of the four main branches of TCM.
Scholars such as Confucius and Mencius later infused the concepts of qigong into the teaching of morals. Qigong was first given institutional support in China when Liu Guizhen, a doctor, cured himself of various ailments with Qigong in a book that focused on its scientific aspects of Qigong. Universities and even hospitals practising TCM were made to set up Qigong departments.

Exchanges between the Chinese and Western societies led to the West being increasingly aware and interested about TCM and Qigong. From then onwards, Qigong has been extensively researched on and practised by people all over the world. Regardless of where they come from, or what culture they belong to, millions of Qigong practitioners adopt this practice as a form of preventive medicine, healing therapy, or even recreation!

Specific routines have to be followed during the practice to focus exercise on certain parts of the body.
